  • Janet Rossant To Deliver Annual Dame Anne McLaren Memorial Lecture - National Stem Cell Network
The UK National Stem Cell Network (UKNSCN) has announced that Professor Janet Rossant, one of the world's foremost developmental biologists from The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, will deliver the second annual Dame Anne McLaren Memorial Lecture. The Lecture is the principal keynote address of the UKNSCN's annual research conference, being next year in Oxford, 6-8 April.

  • Stem Cell Research In Cardiology - A Report By Research And Markets
This report specifies the importance of Stem Cell Research in Cardiology. The study is segmented by Source (Allogenic and Autogenic) and by Type (Bone Marrow Stem Cells, Embryonic Stem Cells, and Other). Projections and estimates are graphically illustrated by geographic region encompassing North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of World. Business profiles of 23 major companies are discussed in the report.

  • Tissue Genesis Applies CE Mark To Its Adult Stem Cell Isolation System
Tissue Genesis, Inc., an innovator of advanced tissue engineering and cell therapy solutions, today announced that effective immediately, the Tissue Genesis Cell Isolation System will be available to the European marketplace. The Tissue Genesis Cell Isolation System is a fully automated system that recovers potentially regenerative cells from a patient's own fat in about an hour, with minimal operator intervention. No tissue pre-processing is required.

  • Global Research Leaders To Speak At UK's National Stem Cell Conference
Professor Robert Nerem and Dr Joseph Vacanti, world leading researchers in tissue engineering and organ transplantation respectively, have been confirmed to deliver keynote talks at the UK National Stem Cell Network (UKNSCN) Annual Conference in Oxford, 6-8 April 2009. They will join the already announced Professor.Janet Rossant, a leading developmental and stem cell biologist, as the conference keynote speakers.

  • Neurons Derived From Embryonic Stem Cells Restore Muscle Function After Injury
Dalhousie Medical School researchers have discovered that embryonic stem cells may play a critical role in helping people with nerve damage and motor neuron diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), regain muscular strength. Motor neurons reside in the spinal cord and control limb movements by enabling muscles to contract. Diseases like ALS cause them to degenerate, resulting in muscle weakness, atrophy, and eventual paralysis.

  • Researchers Define Ideal Time For Stem Cell Collection For Parkinson's Disease Therapy
Researchers have identified a stage during dopamine neuron differentiation that may be an ideal time to collect human embryonic stem cells for transplantation to treat Parkinson's disease, according to data presented at Neuroscience 2008, the 38th annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. • Exercise Helps Increase Production Of Neural Stem Cells In Mice Brains
A new study confirms that exercise can reverse the age-related decline in the production of neural stem cells in the hippocampus of the mouse brain, and suggests that this happens because exercise restores a brain chemical which promotes the production and maturation of new stem cells. Neural stem cells and progenitor cells differentiate into a variety of mature nerve cells which have different functions, a process called neurogenesis.

  • Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission Receives Strong Interest In Third Year Of Funding
The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission (Commission) has received 187 Letters of Intent in response to its three official Requests for Applications (RFAs) for the third year of funding through the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) under the Maryland Stem Cell Research Act of 2006. The Commission plans to issue a Request for Information (RFI) to seek ideas and suggestions for new grants for shared resources to be funded by the MSCRF in the near future.

  • TB Patient Gets New Windpipe Made With Own Stem Cells
A 30-year old Columbian woman living in Spain whose airway was damaged from tuberculosis is the first person in the world to receive a new airway engineered from tissue that was grown from her own stem cells which means she is likely to have a much better quality of life because she will probably not have to take drugs for the rest of her life to stop her immune system rejecting the tissue.

  • HepaLife's Liver Stem Cell Line Launched Onboard NASA's Space Shuttle Endeavour Mission STS-126 For Special Experiments During 15-day Roundtrip
HepaLife Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: HPLF) (FWB: HL1) (WKN: 500625), developing the first-of-its-kind bioartificial liver device intended for the treatment of liver failure, announced today that its proprietary 'PICM-19' liver stem cell line is onboard the Space Shuttle "Endeavour" as part of a scientific experiment to investigate the differentiation and function of stem cells in space. The research is being performed under the International Space Station National Laboratory initiative.

  • Obama Must Avoid 'Tripwires' On Abortion, Bioethics Issues, Washington Post Opinion Says
Although President-elect Barack Obama "seems to be preparing for office with characteristic care and seriousness," he "need[s] to be aware of ... certain tripwires that could trigger explosive controversy," including issues regarding embryonic stem cell research and abortion rights, columnist Michael Gerson writes in a Washington Post opinion piece.
